Frankies Big Rollover in 2007

The new Gears And Tears documentary on BBC1 begins with a small back story about Frankie Wainman Jnr’s biggest accident in the sport.

In 2007 at Hednesford, Frankie rode up onto the bonnet of #195, flipped into the air, and flew upside-down ‘cab first’ straight into the infield armco. He was knocked unconscious and left hanging upside down on his neck. Fast acting emergency staff had the car flipped back upright and the cab removed from the car.

While being wheeled from the circuit on a stretcher Frankie gave a thumbs-up to the crowed, receiving a rapturous applause, and was later seen walking around the pits. A testament to the services of the medical staff, and the improving safety of the cars.

The footage seen in the Gears And Tears documentary did not capture the full impact of the accident. Here is Richard Griffiths take from a completely different angle.
