Potential hat-trick for Smith?

A jubilant Andy Smith (391) at Knockhill 2008
This weekend, the F1’s are making their annual trip North of the Border. In a slight change to the usual format, Knockhill will be run on the Saturday and the Scottish Championship will be run at the notorious Cowdenbeath ‘Racewall’ on the Sunday. At present, just over thirty cars are booked in, including Gold top Andy Smith and Silver roofed Frankie Wainman jnr, as well as two provisionally booked blue graders. Both meetings have valuable WCQR and National Series points on offer.
Andy Smith has won the Scottish Championship the last two years and all eyes will be on him to see if he can make it three in a row. In 2008 he reeled in long time leader Craig Utley (484) within the last five laps, delivering a last bend attack that sent Utley wide enough to allow him through to take the win. Smith has also taken the Miller’s Oil Knockhill Challenge trophy home with him for the past three years. Last year Smith easily dominated on both days; being the fastest car on track in the Scottish Championship and the Challenge trophy race.
Lee Fairhurst (217) will be making his debut BriSCA F1 outing racing from blue grade although he is no novice when it comes to facing the ‘Racewall’. Last year he raced at both tracks in his f2 during the Scottish Weekend and again raced at Cowdenbeath later in the year in his semi final. After concentrating all his efforts on helping son Matt (16), Robin Newson (26) is making a return trackside after a long period of absence. Robin took a back seat when Matt began racing, but this weekend he will be making a weekend comeback using Matt’s shale car on both days.
