Frankie Wainman Jnr won the NZ Welding School World Invitation Superstock Championship on 17th January 2009 at Rotorua Speedway. In doing so he has become the first man to win New Zealand’s most prestigious stockcar racing event three times.

The event consists of three races where twenty-six competitors draw a place at the front, middle and back of the grid for three heats. Frankie competed alongside the top drivers from New Zealand and also UK drivers; Stu Smith Jnr (390GB), Tom Harris (84GB) and Mark Taylor (490GB). Dirk Greidanus (H29) from the Netherlands also took part in the event.

After a close run first two heats, Heat 3 began with Frankie Wainman Jnr leading the field by two points, and lined up 15th on the grid. Wainman made steady progress through the field but was coming in for some serious attention from the New Zealand racers. Frankie eventually managed to limp accross the finishing line with two flat inside tyres, and took the crown by just one solitary point.

FINAL POINTS:
1st 55R Frankie Wainman (64pts)
2nd 87R Pat Westbury (63pts)
3rd 1NZ Malcolm Ngatai (62pts)

Frankie Wainman Jnr has raced in New Zealand for over fourteen years and built his own Superstock and own transporter for the 2008 season (both are kept in New Zealand). Frankie Wainman Jnr races under ’55R’ as his regular UK number ‘515’ belongs to NZ racer Stan Hickey (515R). All NZ drivers are affiliated with a track and as FWJ keeps his NZ superstock near Rotorua at Stan Hickey’s premises, he races with a ‘R’ after his number.

On February 6th and 7th, five drivers from Great Britain will be taking part in the Enzed sponsored Super Stock Car Team Champs. The team will consist of Frankie Wainman Jnr (55R), Stu Smith Jnr (390GB), Tom Harris (84GB), and Mark Taylor (490GB) with Mick Harris (8GB) as reserve. The team is called the British Lions.
