MAY 2013. A NEW ERA!

Well, after the “end of an era” newsletter from March there’s been a change of plan!
On hearing that, with the resignation of a few key committee members, BOSS was to close Rich Masterson (F1 #103) decided the club should be saved if at all possible and contacted Marilyn Caygill to discuss options. Together with husband Mick and daughter Tracey, Marilyn agreed to stay on the committee so long as Rich could take a role on and other help could be found. Rich contacted me (Mike Ashcroft), I was co-opted onto the committee and here we find ourselves.

As the last remaining “supporters club” and having roots that go back more than 35 years we all feel that we owe it to the club to, at least, continue to do what it always has…….support the drivers that entertain us week in, week out!…We hope you agree?
Jim Pratt, long-time president, has agreed to help out from time to time in “an advisory role” and no doubt he’ll be called on for his master of ceremonies role when the need arises. We must at this point thank Pauline and Barry Tempest, Phil Harrington and Carole Clarke as out-going committee members for their years of dedicated service to the club, without them there’d be no club to continue with!

Thanks also to Suzzanne Fairhurst who has helped enormously with membership forms and raffles at the track so far this year, hope you stick with us Mrs F!
As you will have realised we’ve decided to post out this first issue but we’ll be looking into e-mailing future issues to try and reduce costs/preserve the driver fund. Rest assured though that those who have not sent an email contact address in will continue to receive newsletters through the post. Going forward, anyone that continues to receive newsletters by post but would prefer to receive it electronically just drop me a line to:

Firstly we have to say how pleased we are with the interest so far. We have many members who have renewed + a fair few newbies too. Driver members have been a little slower but by no means are they discouraging, those confirmed so far are:

321 Ed Neachell
464 Luke Davidson

With just 3 of 12 rounds gone so far the BOSS Drivers Championship is starting to take shape, more drivers can be added as we go along but scores will no longer be back dated. The Championship historically pays down to 10th place (last year’s prize fund topped £2500) + there’s always a couple of additional prizes for top white and yellow tops and member voted awards for “driver of the year” / “best trier” so put the word out to YOUR favourite driver to join up and get the chance to be in the money!

As usual the Championship is being calculated using the roof colour multiplication system (whites x4, yellows x3, blues x2, reds/ss/etc x1). Danny 212 currently heads up the chart with 2 superb points hauls at Skegness and Belle Vue after a rough start to his season, Tom is chasing hard with consistent results all from a single points accumulator ranking, new driver member Mick Sworder is well up there too and it’s good to see Ben Hurdman in the top ten, his current 9th place standing being just reward for all his obvious hard work and bad luck!

1st 212 Daniel Waiman 142
2nd 84  Tom Harris 116
3rd 150  Mick Sworder 60
4th 1/217  Lee Fairhurst 54
5th 464 Luke Davidson 43
6th 515  Frankie Wainman Jnr 36
7th 2  Paul Harrison 31
8th 4  Dan Johnson 30

Many thanks to Nigel Anderson for his help with the championship table.

Janet and her “team” are continuing to run raffles at various tracks up and down the country and the latest (tickets sold at the May Cov/Sheffield) was won by Mal Brown, the prize, as is regularly the case was a “booze hamper” and the winning tickets (266-270) were drawn by young fan Sienna Moss who is NEARLY 3 years old!

We have spoken to Billy Johnson (169) who had a nasty accident at the May Sheffield meeting, his injuries including a punctured lung are healing well, he is hoping to start physio any time soon and is aiming to return track side before the end of the season. I’m sure all within BOSS wish Billy a speedy and full recovery.

Marilyn has had an invite/request from Glen Lord of Inside Stockcar World to do an article tracing the history of BOSS. Rich, myself and Marilyn are currently working on this and hope to have the piece in the next issue (or two) of this excellent new oval racing magazine. Thanks also to Glen and Stu Stretton for our new BOSS logo.

Rich is currently organising a drivers Q & A night to be held at Nigel Harrhys Barston Lakes fishing venue. The event will take place on the evening of Sunday 30th June and drivers who have expressed an interest in attending include Nigel Harrhy, Mark Woodhull, Paul Hines, Rob & Chris Cowley and maybe a couple more. Full details for this are still on-going but entry will be FREE to members whilst non-members are very welcome by either paying £5 on the door or by joining BOSS on the night for £10 thus foregoing the £5 entry fee! There’ll be a bar open until 11pm, bar food will be available and I’m sure there’ll be an opportunity to tour the Nigel45 workshops during the event.

Please keep an eye on stoxnet/allstox + for further updates from Rich.

This subject has caused a fair bit of discussion but we have unanimously decided to retain the BOSS AWARDS NIGHT in it’s much loved format. As an out of season, shirt and tie, sit down meal event the awards night has always enjoyed great support from the members and we see no need to fix what aint broke! As a nod to the clubs heritage and as a mark of respect to the earlier committee we have also decided to retain the services of the excellent Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford…..

We have done our best to avoid likely clashes with other events, the date has been chosen to allow people their annual pilgrimage to NZ/Florida etc and we sincerely hope you can join us at our annual do!

As ever, tickets will sell quite quickly for this event and we do have to pay a fair way in advance for this event so can we please ask that you contact us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to reserve your tickets?

Ticket reservations can be made with Marilyn on telephone 01509 769374 and payment can be sent via cheque to: Marilyn Caygill, 19 Northill Close, Sileby, Loughborough. LE12 7PS. Payment can also be made to Marilyn at the 335 transporter.

The hotel have agreed to keep the room cost the same as in the previous few years (£60 double/twin room on a b&b basis), rooms can be booked directly with the hotel on 01274 406606 quoting the BOSS AWARDS NIGHT to get the room rate.

Voting slips will be sent out to all BOSS members late in the season so everyone can vote for the favourites!

Depending on the success of the first drivers Q & A night we may try and have a couple/few more of these in different areas of the country. There has been talk of organising a BOSS karting event later in the year + a few more ideas have been discussed. If anyone out there has any suggestions for future BOSS socials please, don’t be shy, get in touch!

Marilyn Caygill…
Rich Masterson…
Mike Ashcroft…

That just about wraps this (first) attempt up, more newsletters will be sent out as the season progresses but please keep an eye out for updates via stoxnet/allstox and (web addresses above).
If anyone has anything they want including in the newsletters, be it info, news or just a plug for your own company please feel free to drop me a line.
Mike Ashcroft (for BOSS)
