From the age of 5 I used to travel the short 3 miles to “Sunny Brafield” to watch the likes of Chisholm, Smith and Wolfenden. Today, I still go but in a working capacity. Throughout the last 39 years, Bev Greenhalf has always been the voice, face and personality I associate with happy times with all my oval racing memories. Even pronouncing my name wrongly when I had my first meeting made me smile. Bev will be sorely missed, he represented an era which has now passed but will never be forgotten. A man whose unassuming and modest nature could teach a few in todays game a lesson…. May you rest in peace Bev, the post race whistle in your ears can drift away.

Firstly, heartfelt condolences to Bev’s family; I can only imagine how sad this time must be for you.
As for Bev’s countless friends, it’s a great shock to know we’ll never hear his familiar commentaries again.
We’ve become so used to listening to him, whether at Brandon, Brafield, Bradford and elsewhere for so many years that he was taken for granted as being the voice of the sport we all enjoy. We grew up, or grew old, together as part of it. Now, somehow, it really won’t be quite the same, will it?
Farewell Bev, and thanks for the memories.

I am just a stock car spectator and therefore had no idea what was going on to start with – until I listened to Bev’s commentary. His enthusiasm was contagious. He had the very rare ability to sympathasise with the drivers and the spectators.
Racing just won’t be the same without him, especially the European Championship. I hope they will do a Bev trophy race for that weekend.
He touched a lot of lives – probably more than he ever knew!
    RIP

God Bless mate, your voice will be missed by many, some of who would not recognise you but for those who did you were always a very pleasent bloke who always had time to chat about our beloved sport. You commentated on some of the biggest events in the game, now I suspect you will be doing it at the “Big racetrack in the sky” alongside many of the sports greats who have left us. Never again will “Gentlemen start your engines” mean as much. R.I.P Bev !

Bev was a true gentleman, a fantastic commentator and his service to BriSCA stock car racing, and Brafield Stadium in particular are deserving of so much more than just plain old ‘thank you’. In my stock car life, Bev has always been there – I’ve heard him commentate at practically every track I’ve been to and his enthusiasm and dedication to the sport never waned. He’ll be remembered by the stock car fraternity as a true great.

Having been a fan of Brisca F1 and other formulas at Brafield/Northampton since 1977 it just wont be the same without the voice of Bev Greenhalf. He was without doubt the best by far at commentating on the Brisca F1s in the country and back in the 90s he did a pretty good at Baarlo too. RIP Bev you will be sadly missed.

Having been a Brisca F1 fan since I was 2 months old (I was born in 1990), it has now become a big part of my life, and I just can’t see the Brisc F1s being the same now without the voice of Bev GreenHalf. I only met him a few times in race control and I thought ‘what a lovely man’ it was a shock when i heard he had passed away.

All i can really say is R.I.P Bev, you will be sadly missed by all that knew you and heard your great commentating.

  17. Darren Davies says:

Brafield is my home track, the place I first went to Stock Cars in 1970 and the place I grew up. In the 40 years that have followed Bev has been a constant. He was The Voice, whether it was getting more and more excited as a race progressed, or grumbling about getting the pit gate closed as the curfew neared, he was The Voice.
As a young fan in the 70′s I poured over available programme or magazine I could get my hands on. Every Brafield meeting saw me reading and re-reading the programme long into the following week. It was only much later that I realised Bev was responsible for most of the copy, usually under a variety of pseudonyms. Many years later when I occasionally stepped into cover Steve Botham’s column in Stoxworld, it was a very conscious decision to call my piece Scene and Heard. The influence of those early, chatty programme pieces was obvious.
Despite commentating at so many other tracks, on so many incredible races, and calling home so many World Champions, for me he was Brafield. It’s my stock car home but it will never sound the same again.

Most people knew Bev as the voice of Brisca, but there was another side to BG that people did not know. Holland we first went to holland in the early eighties convincing Bev that he would not be a “Gooseberry” we went to Barlo and Gent were we would sit on the grass drinking beer he fell in love with Holland and the dutch people we had many happy vistits with him and later with Dot. We would always spend an extra day in Holland so that we could travel somewhere by rail. Sometimes we were lucky to find a steam railway as we did when we went to Bamburg in Germany we raced to Frankfurt and rode on Hitlers war time train. Steam railways were a passion of Bevs we rode on trains in Germany,Holland,England and Wales. One of the other things Bev loved were the speeches by Churchill which he would recite. Another passion of BG was die cast model buses i cannot imagine how many he had as when we went to Holland or Germany many hours would be spent in model shops. Bev would often go to a custom car meet with our friend Dave Collins. My lingering memory is of BG coming out of a cigar shop in Holland lighting the cigar and taking in its flavour. BG loved Brafield and worked for two gentlemen of the sport Mr. John La Trobe and Mr. John Heynes. We were lucky to have had BG as a frield and workmate for over 30 years RIP Janet and John

From the first time I ever went to Brafield in 1973, Bev was on the microphone and was my introduction to Formula 1 Stock Car racing. Going to other tracks around the country over the years and hearing his voice over the commentary was like listening to an old respected friend whose knowledge of our sport was always second to none. I shall always associate Bev with Brafield more than any other track and he will be truly missed. Rest in Peace, Sir.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Bev. Hugely passionate stock car fan who dedicated much of his life to our great sport.

His voice was synonymous to so many great moments that have taken place in Brisca f1. I will never forget his commentary over the 1999 world final with the immortal words ‘they’ve all gone!’ bellowing out as Frank, Andrew and John battle it out at Coventry.

Bev has been so instrumental in developing and maintaining our links to mainland Europe and his influence on the World, European and Gold Cup competitions should never be overlooked.

I still have a video of my first final win in v8′s at Coventry. It was a pleasure to hear Bev commentating on the race. I will never forget his words ‘this young man has a bright future on the raceways’ as I collected my trophy.

Bev’s death is a huge loss to Brisca stock car racing. I would like to thank Bev for everything he has done for F1 stockcar racing.

We would talk with Bev about his earlier years and interests in Stock Cars, when he lived near our present home in Bournemouth. Subsequently his contribution to the sport has been immense including brilliance as a commentator for over 40 years. Dorothy and his family gave brave support during Bev’s painful terminal illness, and we extend profound sympathy and condolence. Bev’s amazing knowledge and energy on an international scale will sadly be missed but always remembered by the many thousands with whom he

I am not sure if people realise the enormous effort he put in travelling to various parts of the country as the promoters representitive(Northampton) for all formulas, but he seemed to be at them all…and always spoke eloquently for the good of the sport and for “his” track.

Despite the huge number of people he knew, Bev always had time for a quick chat, or say hello, at whatever race meeting in the UK or Holland.
I will always remember i was looking at magazines one day in WH Smiths in Birmingham, a voice behind said “are you going to buy that sir?” Yes it was the voice of Brisca. I saw him there a few times while in my lunch break at work, he always had a chat usually about stock cars or Northampton. He would then look at magazines about old buses, another of his interests.
So sad that he is lost to us. He may be gone but his voice will live on forever in the form of old race commentaries.

Extremely sad news about a man who had for so many years been at the centre of BriSCA Formula 1. At times in his early years, controversial with his involvement in Stock Car Supporter, to becoming a pivotal `diplomat’ for many years in the key years of BriSCA evolution. He commanded huge respect and has been the man responsible for the warmth and enthusiasm between Mainland Europe and UK. His loyalty and devotion to NIR ensured `Brafield’ was centre stage for BriSCA F1 – and, as a commentator was a major assett to the sport. Even in his later days, an trusted ambassador for BriSCA.
Bev always wanted the best for BriSCA F1, in recent years the sport has progressed so much and started to court the recognition many of his articles and thoughts requested, thankfully he has been with us to see that evolution.
Bev is certainly one of our sports legends and characters and his passing will be a great loss however thanks to his inspiring work and record, his memory will live on as something to celebrate in the future.
All at BriSCA and Startrax extend our deepest condolences at this difficult time to friends and family.

Childhood memories of Sunny Brafield: hot summers lying on the grass, tyre smoke, burning rubber, burning clutches, unsilenced V8 chevys, the odd Jaguar engine, being told to get off the white rail by a guy called Darkie(!)…and all through this is the voice of Bev Greenhalf, a voice that could have graced ANY sport on TV. He was the voice of BriSCA F1. How come I never got tired of him saying “keen competitive prices”? He said this at every Brafield meeting for forty odd years but coming from him it never sounded repetitive. The last time I cried for someone I didn’t know was for Graham Hill in 1975. When you walked into race control and saw who you would be with that night, it was a source of great confidence that you were working with the best. Bev was certainly in that elite group. When I was just starting out it was a great help to have the confidence of a man who by that time was already part of the fixtures in almost every commentary box in the country. He was tireless in getting proper links to the Dutch Stock Car scene and even learnt fluent Dutch for his commentaries and of course many meetings over there. In Bev, the sport has lost a great character who was pivotal in the progession of the sport on an international level. His enormous efforts have turned Brafield into the home of the European and the World Masters and with similar affection and dedication Bev enhanced the Anglo-Dutch relationship. The frequent exchange of drivers, the first international veterans race at Venray – Bev played a major part in making it happen. For more than 20 years we worked together, mainly on programme writing – Bev was reliable as a rock, funny and a true gentleman. I hold many fond memories of our times together, discussing stockcars and life together with Dot, DC, John and Janet at the “Hysteria”. A Tribute to a great man and a great loss to Stock Car Racing,
I have known Bev since 1967 first of all just chatting to him and others about Stock Cars . In 1970 we began working together at various tracks throughout the country were Bev always had time for the fans in the Pit Area. He could be a very funny man with a great sense of humour as well as someone who took his job very seriously. On more than one occasion whilst working at Crayford with Al Henderson (Clerk of the Course ) and the late John Jenkins ( Pit Marshall ) the meetings finished on shedule at 10pm then a rush to get Bev and Al back to Euston Station to catch the last train back to Birmingham New Street at 11-15 . It was such a rush but they always made it, huffing and puffing but once on board they would both light up.

The trip to Euston was a quiet one , they never spoke a word but bums were clenched and Eyes Closed as Strange smells wafted through the Car ( This been a Mini)

As for Bev,s serious side well he never spoke out when he was right but always had a quiet word with the person soon after. One time the pit gate was left open and he forgot to switch off the Mike before he let Rip and as everyone looked to the Box Bev,s face was as Red as my Red Flag

I will miss this lovely man, our chats on the phone or our meetings up at Birmingham.

    Farewell my Friend.

For so many, many years, THE voice of BriSCA. I long ago reached the point that, whichever track I was at and whoever was promoting, if it was Formula One and it wasn’t Bev’s voice coming over the PA, it simply didn’t sound right. With no disrespect to anyone else, I’m sure I’m still going to feel that way about Northampton for a long time to come.

In later years, I had the opportunity to work at meetings with Bev as a colleague, and it was always a privilege. And, despite my being a Hot Rod fan, he always tolerated me and my strange ways. And I know I’m going to miss his rude and funny asides once the mike was off. Well, usually, it was off first!

Once he knew I was a collector of oval racing memorabilia, he seemed to take delight in producing the odd rarity for me, sometimes just as a gift. Still the only programme I own from the Buffalo Stadium came from Bev.

Later still, we discovered a shared interest in the pre-stox history of Brafield and I learnt so much from him about that too.

There are no adequate words to describe the loss to the sport that Bev’s passing represents but it is of course a far greater loss for his family.

RIP Bev, it was an honour to have known you. Till we meet again…

My first recollection of Bev was his “Well, well, well, well, well” after Lundy had won his 6th at Bradford in 1997. It was my first World Final and only my 3rd stockcar race since the mid 70′s. He “talked” me through the meeting. I met him at Baarlo and asked him if learning Dutch was difficult. He replied “it is, but it is worth the effort”. He was right, I’ve since married a Dutch lass, of course it’s worth it! Someone mentioned how his commentary speeded up as the the race got closer to the chequered flag. He was quite brilliant at that. He had a deep yet silky voice, he never missed a word. The clarity of his commentating and the seamless descriptions of the unfolding race, painted a moving picture to anyone within earshot of any of the sound system. His knowledge was vast and well researched, providing F1 stockcar fans with the best possible background before a race and the best possible description during and after. I’ll miss you mate.

What a great guy Bev was. I’ve known him for over forty years from fan on the terraces to one of the officianados of the sport but he was always such a down to earth character ever ready for a bit of friendly banter, giving as good as he received and always had time for a chat. His voice on the mike along with the legendary Peter Arnold will for ever be remembered as one of “the voices of BriSCA” and will be so sadly missed. Let’s now hope that his dulcet tones are now booming out at that big Stock Car circuit in the sky and that perhaps he is reunited with many of the sports Golden Greats.
Will miss you old friend and hope to meet again some day.

He was the voice of BriSCA, and since my first meeting in 1975, an ever present part of the atmosphere that surrounded our great sport. Now he is gone, it will never be the same again.

BriSCA, the drivers, promoters and all the fans like me, owe him so much. He was one of the greats, gone but never to be forgotten.

I was so sad to hear of Bev’s passing last week.
It is nearing 40 years since we first met when I was Racing Manager of Hednesford Raceway. He was commentating at the odd meeting for the then promoter, Bill Morris.
Our paths criss crossed after this, and when I became a promoter he was the first person I approached to commentate on all BriSCA meetings at Incarace tracks since the late 1980′s.
When I took over at Northampton our relationship became very close and he was a great help to me throughout the years that followed.
Bev was a great man who added so much to the lives of everyone who met him. Looking back over the years he never seemed to change. Always a welcoming smile and a larger than life character. He was a man of high principles with a dedication to F1 Stock Car Racing that would be hard to beat.
Mr Greenhalf you were a great commentator, friend and a great servant to our sport.
My sincere condolences to Dot and all the Family at this sad time.

As a young lad growing up, one of my most treasured possessions was my Northampton Mug. One day I had the misfortune of dropping it and breaking it on the floor. I was distraught and my mother phoned up the stadium and left a message on the drivers booking line asking if they had another left to replace it!

I heard nothing, until one day I got back home and found two brand new mugs, a new F1 calendar and my programme from the last Northampton meeting autographed. It was Bev himself who took the time out to drive to my house (having never met me or any of my family)and make my day so special. I even had an invitation to visit him up in the Box at a meeting of my choosing!

I will never forget him for this, kind thoughtful and a brilliant commentator, his memory will always live on.

Bev Greenhalf was to stockcar racing what Harry Carpenter was to boxing. His voice was synomonous to the sport. His enthusiasm and excitment was conveyed on many occasion on the mike. The particular occasions that I remember was when Andy Smith won the World Title for the first time at Bradford in 1994. Ten years earlier Bev proclaimed “Have you ever seen a World Final like that?!!” when Andy’s father Stuart took his firth World Title at Belle Vue. Northampton Stadium (or Brafield as I still know it) has been like a second home for me for over forty years and the voice of Bev Greenhalf has been a reassuring constant both there and at so many other tracks.

His contribution to Anglo-Dutch relations cannot be underestimated and the Euro weekend will not sound the same without Bev’s snippets of (self-taught, I believe) Dutch commentary.

    Bev Greenhalf

On 10 January 2012 stock car racing lost one of it’s most dedicated and enthusiastic stalwarts.

For many years, like most race fans, I ‘knew’ Bev as the voice of BriSCA F1 and the man who kept Brafield Stadium going for a host of promoters and a key player not only in the Dutch connection but the running of the sport over many years.

In the late 1990′s I started working at Incarace meetings and in particular following the Bond’s expansion into Brafield had both the pleasure and honour of working with Bev at many, many race meetings. Although he had not been well for some time Bev missed hardly any of our F1 meetings throughout the 2011 season showing that same dedication, commitment and love for the sport.

Bev’s passing is a huge loss to the sport and during all those hours spent in Race Control I learned so much while at the same time having a lot of fun too with all the banter.

The thoughts of us all will be with his family and friends but, as I am sure Bev would be the first to say looking down on us, “the show must go on”. Bev’s legacy certainly lives on so let’s take good care of it. RIP Bev.

In what I consider the golden era of F1 stock cars, late 70s early 80s I lived in Manchester so could see one or usually more meetings in easy distance of home every weekend.
So a trip further afield was a special occasion. Going to Brafield meant seeing a lot of drivers that you wouldnt normally see and hearing them announced by that commentator who seemed so knowledgable and professional somehow added to the magic.
Bevs voice became more familiar over the years usually associated with the big occasions.
The word legend has been used a lot in the tributes paid to Bev and there arent many non-drivers in stock car racing who deserve that title. Bev is one of the few. RIP.

It is a sad day indeed but a time to reflect on the happy times you spent with Bev.
Mine has to be the time a group of us went over to Holland, it was a fact finding mission to see what the field racers had to offer. We had been showed around workshops fields and were treated like royalty.
Around tea time we ended up going to Chris Bimmel’s house Chris was heavily involved with one of the field tracks but only raced tarmac. We sat and drank and Chris’s wife started to fetch traditional Dutch food out that we all devoured energetically. Well the food went so of she went and fetched some more so we all out of courtesy ate it all up. This went on for nearly two hours before it dawned on us that Dutch custom is that if the plate is empty your guests want more. Later that evening we went to a party at Andre Neets house for his birthday and to say we was all a bit full is an understatement.
Of course Bev embraced the fields and we have the relationship that we currently enjoy.
RIP the voice of BriSCa but also the voice of Holland.

It was always an honour and a privilege to share a microphone and commentary box with the Voice of BriSCA, not only due to Bev’s excellent informative and entertaining commentary, but also due to his excellent and humorous company in the box.

To me Bev was more than just a commentator – he was a great friend, colleague, guide and mentor, especially during the early years of my own commentating career. When I first took up the mic, I was easily able to inform a crowd – but it was Bev who really taught me how to entertain them as well as inform, and I will always be grateful to have received so much help and guidance from him. Sharing the World Final commentary at Brafield with Bev in 2011 was a very special and memorable occasion.

To many, Bev WAS BriSCA F1 – in many more ways than just as the formula’s voice – but it is for his wonderful commentaries, full of brilliant knowledge, enthusiasm and humour, that he will forever be remembered. The sport will will never be the same again without Bev’s voice.

My condolences and best wishes to the Greenhalf family and all who knew this wonderful person – goodbye Bev, may you rest in peace.

Just after we made our first attempts at F1 racing in the early eighties we were chatting to him and mentioned that for the first time ever we would both be appearing at the next Brafield. We will really miss Bev at Short Circuit magazine; he was a regular contributor for many, many years keeping our readers up to date on BriSCA happenings. He also used to pop into our offices regularly until a few years ago, probably on his way to picking up the trophies for Northampton and discussing all the gossip behind the scenes, and returning any unsold copies, which until only a few years ago was rare!
Bev drew the line at sending stuff for the magazine with technology – Ok he did use the fax machine but used to moan at that, he did think that ‘us’ publishers should have a A4 sheets of paper with his words on it – any other way was simply not journalism. One of his best was unusually a meeting report for an Open Hot Rod meeting at Brafield – 4 pages of typing, and not one name mentioned, as it was probable that many of the competitors would have been banned by their own promotion – was a few years ago!
Personally I will really missing Bev, both as a friend and especially his comments in our office about the internet which he hated – and here we are remembering a great man, friend, not only to me, but to the whole sport through a book of condolences gathered on a web site – although a great one!
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dorothy, family and many friends at this very sad time.

Fifteen or so years ago I was taking lots of photos and Bev was really helpful with me getting “in the middle” at various tracks and with getting pictures into programmes and magazines. He always seemed pleased to see you when you turned up at a meeting – even if you seen him at another meeting in a different bit of the country 12 or so hours earlier.

He’ll be sorely missed – he does the Voice on all my memories of racing even those where really I know he wasn’t doing the commentating.

    Condolences to his family,

    Keith

As i write this on the eve of Bevs funeral i need to reflect on some of the times we spent together, meeting first in the late sixties and the travelling together from the mid eighties often in the company of Brian Beet and the late Roy Suttle , then on to Holland this time with John and Janet Adey what great times we had Bev really enjoying it, Bev and i would often meet up in the week and go for a pint or two at our local.
The nighties bought about a lot more travelling together not only in the UK but also across in the Netherlands, This was something that Bev really liked and there was talk at one time of Bev and Dot buying out there, We travelled to Barrlo on numerous occasions up to its closure in 98 then onto Venray for the rest of the meetings .Bev and I would also pop accross to other meetings other than the Gold Cup this we carried on right up to the closure of the old Venray

Besides travelling to all those tracks we went down under in 05 again this is somewere Bev enjoyed . I remember on one occasion we went to Bathurst Race Circut only for Bev to drive the Hire Car round the track his face was a picture , Whilst travelling down to OZ i well remember we had a stop over in Dubai and seeing Bev as we were walking through the airport persperation pouring down his face looked liked he had just done ten rounds with Henry Cooper, then to the other extreme we were at an East Coast Track were he spent the whole meeting huddled around the heater he was that cold. there is of course lots more

I sure will miss this Man who i have had some great times with , i hope i have done all i can to Honour such a Good Friend , Bev it is with tears in my eyes i say Goodnight and God Bless RIP

Bev was one of a very select group of people who really were the best at what they did.
Having heard his commentaries for over 4 decades he was always informative, clear and very knowledgeable. The voice of BriSCA will be sadly missed in future. With condolences to his family and friends, RIP The Voice of BriSCA.

Really sorry to hear about Bev’s passing. I’ve far too many memories of Bev’s commentaries to mention here but he was a joy to listen to over the last 25 years I have followed the sport and he will be sadly missed.

    Condolences to his family.

What can any of us say. I’ve known and worked alongside Bev since the mid Seventies he was always a true gent, and even when our opinions differed we always parted on good terms, Bev was a true supporter to the National MiniStox Club taking an interest and fighting their corner when he could.
Bev will be truly missed, my condolences to Dot and the family.

Like many others I knew Bev from the early days when we watched stock car racing from the terraces. And as time went by I admired his skills as a commentator, journalist and administrator. Everyone will have different memories, one of my favourites, his opening line to one of his early commentaries “If you think you can hear thunder its not, its the butterflies in my stomach doing the military two step”.
Great memories of a great guy. cheers mate Steve.

RIP Bev, you will be sadly missed by thousands on and off the terraces and be remembered by countless fans who haven’t been racing for decades. Your commentary is as synonymous to F1 Stock Cars as the Rinky Dink tune is to a rolling lap at Brafield. What a tough act to follow.

I cannot remember how I met Bev, but it must have been down to photographs for the Stockcar Supporter Magazine.
Bev “promoted” me to Charles Ochiltree and I added Coventry and Leicester to my “official photographer” list, likewise John LaTrobe at Brafield at Bevs intervention allowed me onto the centre at Brafield. Without Bev’s help who knows how things would have been. In that way he touched my life and I wonder how many more lifes’s changed for the better when guided by his gentle manner and advice.
Bevs was truly one the really nice guys, a gentle honest and helpful guy and never a wrong word for anybody.
I know KB is regarded as “Mr Brisca” and rightly so…but surely Bev Greenhalgh was the “Voice of Brisca”.

    R.I.P. Bev
