Venray, 21st August 2016 – World Cup Report and Photo Gallery

After several years of British domination, the World Cup stayed in the Netherlands this year when Roy Maessen (H400), who lives within walking distance of the track, chalked up his first major stock car title.

Maessen was joined on the front of the grid by Gert-Jan Keijzer (H6), with Sjeng Smidt Jnr (H148) and Chris Weyenberg (H380) behind them. The highest UK qualifiers were Rob Speak (318) and Frankie Wainman Junior (515), who lined up on row 3.

Gert-Jan Keijzer grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with Maessen in close pursuit. Further back Frankie Wainman Jr was punted wide on the first turn dropping him several places from grid six starting spot and leaving Speak to take up third for the early laps. Maessen nudged his way into the lead just before the halfway point. Keizjer began to lose places allowing Saturday’s Final winner, Ron Kroonder (H217), to take up second place.

As the laps wound down, Wainman began to claw his way back towards the front but was unable to close within striking distance of the leading duo. With two laps to go Maessen was knocked wide by the lapped car of Mick Sworder (150) allowing Kroonder to take the lead but this was short-lived. Maessen fought back on the final turn to barge Kroonder wide and won the drag race to the line. Frankie Wainman Junior finished as the top British driver in third.

Later in the afternoon Shaun Webster (48) regained some pride for the British drivers when he dominated the meeting proper.

World Cup result: 1st Roy Maessen (H400); 2nd Ron Kroonder (H217); 3rd Frankie Wainman Jr (515); 4th Sjeng Smidt Jr (H148); 5th Rob Speak (318); 6th Luke Davidson (464); 7th Lee Fairhurst (217); 8th Gert-Jan Keijzer (H6); 9th Dan Johnson (4); 10th Evert van den Berg (H12)
