Buxton – April 19th 2009 Meeting Report

Andy Smith (391) final winner

Andy Smith (391) final winner

A gloriously sunny day at Buxton set the scene for some first class BriSCA F1 stockcar action. With the sun beating down, the two thirds format was employed ensuring good car numbers in each heat.

Heat one’s line up included current NS champion Frankie Wainman jnr (515) and gold roof Holder Andy Smith (391) who debuted his brand new tarmac car. Luke Davidson (464) led for two laps before ex f2 driver Lee Dimmick (459) took over. While Lee Robinson (107) tried to get past Matt Newson (16), Frankie Wainman jnr successfully passed Andy Smith and managed to quickly get away but no-one was going to catch Lee Dimmick and he won comfortably.

Heat two soon followed with FWJ seeing the end of his day after having to pull off with engine problems. Sole white top Rich Masterton (103) led them away from Lee Dimmock; while further down the pack, Dan Johnson (4), Tom Harris (84) and Matt Newson (16) battled to lead the reds with Matt coming off best. Lee Dimmick soon took the lead with Robert Broome (41) a good second with a swift Matt Newson closing in. Matt passed Robert, then Robert passed Matt but had to pull off on turn two allowing Stu Smith jnr (390) to close the gap. Lee, however had a quarter of a lap lead and held onto it to win both his heats.

Rich Masterton again set the pace for heat three with Lee Robinson (107) being the first red to ‘show’. Luke Davidson (464) took the lead but was overhauled by a quick Chris Cowley (37) at the halfway point. Mark Gilbank (21) and Dan Johnson (4) had a coming together with Dan going over Mark’s front tyre; clattering the rumble strip, going up over the infield banking before powering down and getting back on track at the last possible moment just before turn three. Chris Cowley was well clear to take the win; with a drag race to the line taking place between Tom Harris and Andy Smith.

The final saw nearly thirty cars with Lee Dimmick again setting the pace and the reds jostling for position. Spencer Taylor (498) got in amongst the reds on turn two, spun the back end out but was getting the car facing the right way and back on track when John Lund (53) came out of turn two; unable to avoid Spencer, he tried to squeeze between him and the armco, rode up Spencer and mangled his tarmac wing on the top of two backstraight fence posts.

Somehow, Andy Smith (391) managed to ride up over the top of Joe Booth’s (446) front end, drop off and was quickly away as if nothing had happened. Matt Newson and Mark Gilbank (21) tangled; resulting in Matt going for a ride up the armco and along the backstraight fenceposts where he got stuck fast and a HIAB was needed to get his car down.

Lee Dimmick almost bagged his first F1 final but his lead was curtailed with the restart. With his tyre going down Lee hit the armco going into turn two allowing Andy Smith to take the lead and victory comfortably. Andy with his first final win in a brand new tarmac car, smoked his tyres up going over the finish line.

The GN was the very last race of the day with Andy not taking the lap handicap. Neil Shenton (35) led briefly until Lee Dimmick once again took the benefit of some clean air. Yellows came out for James Morris (463) and Chris Cowley (37) hitting the armco on turn three with Tony Smith (91). Neil Shenton then went piling in just as the yellows came out.

Craig Finnikin (55) then went up the back of Lee Robinson (107) launching himself up in the air with Craig’s rear outside hitting a fencepost stopping the car dead, dropping it to the floor and spinning into the corner. Up front, Dan Johnson (4) spun Ian Venables (60) but it allowed Stu Smith jnr and Paul Harrison (2) to close up with Lee Dimmick losing the lead to Stu Smith jnr with five to go.

An action packed meeting with some spectacular incidents, slickly run as always by the Buxton Raceway team.
