Blauwhuis – April 25th 2011 Meeting Report

After a bit of a calm start of the season because of the late Easter the dutch season started on full roar over Easter weekend. Sint Maarten had over fifty F1’s for their season opener (overview here), Dokkum (NAC) started the season with fourteen F1’s and Blauwhuis with twenty three cars. For H868 Hein Smit this was his first meeting. The format for the day was three out of four heats leading up to the final. Because of the dry weather from the last week the clay became harder and harder which resulted in smoking tyres in the final.

In the first heat it was H232 Hein Damstra who took the lead for the first half of the race. Behind him it was H61 Koen Maris and H11 Onno Pietersma who worked themselves through the field within two laps. Halfway through the race, Maris and Pietersma arrived behind Damstra and whereas Maris passed him quickly, Pietersma had some more work to do. This left Maris to take the heat win with Pietersma second and Damstra third.

In the second heat it was H53 Sjors de Jong who managed to dive into the ditch before the green flag fell. After the (re)start it was again Koen Maris who was flying through the field, this time accompanied by H353 Jouke Stapert, H76 Weird Gietema and H399 Jessy de Bruijn. In the fourth lap Maris took the lead from the strong driving of H147 Jacob Lootsma. Stapert was close behind and Gietema and de Bruijn were battling hard for 3rd place. A few laps before the finish Stapert managed to take the lead but because of mechanical failure he lost it in the last lap. This left the win to Maris ahead of de Bruijn and Gietema.

In the third heat it was H223 Jannes Boskma who took the lead but he could only hold Jessy de Bruijn off for a few laps. Leaving all the room for Jessy de Bruijn to take the heat win. Behind de Bruijn, Boskma took the second spot and the battle behind them for third was between H88 Willem-Hein de Haan, H151 Marco Falkena and H195 Harmen Zwerver. Third place went to Zwerver in front of Falkena and de Haan.

In the final heat it was Lootsma who would take the lead from the first corner and keep it right until the end. Behind him it was firstly Age Koudenburg that worked himself into second place but he couldn’t keep the storming duo of Stapert and Gietema behind him. Their battle ended in a second place for Gietema, third for Stapert and 4th for Koudenburg.

With a group of drivers who showed in the heats that they were on it today, it promised to be a lively final. And that it became! The race started with a pile up in corner 1-2 leaving Age Koudenburg on his roof. Some other stockcars ended in the back of Koudenburg but all were ok. In the braking for the waved yellow H500 Floris Verbruggen and Smit H686 got tangled together and could not be separated from each other easily.

After the restart it was again Lootsma who took a big lead. Behind him Maris and de Bruijn worked themselves into a heavy battle through the field but it seemed that the gap Lootsma had was too big. But Lootsma span on the homestraight giving Maris and de Bruijn the chance to fight for first place. Behind them, Gietema and Pietersma were fighting for third. What happened between Maris and de Bruijn I did not see, but it ended with a flat tyre for de Bruijn and Maris up on the top of a bank. In the last laps Pietersma and Gietema were both trying to to take the win but it was Gietema who brought his second final from the weekend home. H43 Haye Dijkstra completed the podium places.
