Nominee 2: Nigel Harrhy

2015 saw Nigel take his first win on the Coventry shale.

Nigel Harrhy, or “Our Nige” as he is affectionately known on Stoxnet, was born on the farm next door to Coventry Stadium. I won’t give his age away but he is slightly older(!) than his racing number and tells me that his only previous knowledge of stock car racing was an annual visit to Brandon.

Nigel’s previous oval experience, like his dad John, revolved around speedway racing. John rode for the Coventry Bees in the late sixties and early seventies while Nigel shifted shale at Stoke for four years before moving to grasstrack racing.

Nigel found the stock car racing bug after watching Gears and Tears on TV, at that stage he did not even know tarmac racing existed and made initial investigations via the internet before debuting at the 2010 Gala Night at Birmingham. Right from that first meeting Nigel has kept the stock car racing public informed and amused via his blog, giving detailed accounts of his races and the almost inevitable repairs required week in, week out. Nigel and son Jake work on the cars during the week, while additional help on racedays comes from Bry and Kim, amongst others.

Favourite race of 2015? It has to be heat one at Coventry on September 5th when Nige took the flag ahead of Mick Sworder to rapturous applause. As for 2016, Nigel is already well into refurbishing both cars and would dearly love to make the grid for the last Coventry World Final. Rumour has it that Santa may have a small block Chevy on his sleigh with Nigel’s name on it. The only question is, has he been a good boy all year?  You decide.

Nigel’s 2016 prep is well underway
