Flashback Friday: A new weekly article brought to you from the vaults of top BriSCA Photographer Colin Casserley.
A trip down memory lane or educational for the newer fan. Over the coming weeks we will be re-visiting some of the stars and their cars that have entertained, pioneered and shaped the sport that is BriSCA Formula One Stock Car racing.
This week: Champions from the past
Doug Cronshaw (396) and Stuart Smith (391) taken at Northampton in 1972. Cronshaw’s car was sold to Stuart Smith the following year, and after Smith used it briefly it ended up in the hands of Dave Chisholm. Chissy then drove the car to 3 world titles.
Tony Neal (100) in the pits at Coventry in 1972. Neal won the world final in 1968 at Coventry and was a leading light in the Aycliffe track until he emigrated to New Zealand in 1974.
George Ansell (375), the “King of Tar” was world champion in 1967, however this photo was taken at Mendips raceway, Bristol in 1973.
Willie Harrison (2) photo taken at Northampton in 1973. Harrison would have to wait until 1982 to claim his world final victory, but he came so close on several occasions before then.
Frankie Wainman snr (212) photo taken at Rochdale in 1972, the friday night before the world final at Belle Vue.
Mike Close (199) Mike with the gold roof at Rochdale in 1978.
Dave Mellor (304), not known for the appearance of his cars, but this 1979 photo from Long Eaton proves that Mellor had some smart paint jobs when he was World Champion.
Stuart Bamforth (3), photo taken at White City in 1974 when the track was shale, Bammy would win the world final two years later at the same track, but by then it had been changed to a tarmac surface.
