Flashback Friday: The Wainman Family #1

This week (and next week) the spotlight is on the Wainman family.

The Wainmans have been associated with stock car racing since Frankie Wainman, Sr took to the track in 1970 and they still play a major part in the sport both on and off the track.

In the staging area at Leicester – this would be circa 1976.

Fan clubs were a big part of the sport in the 60s & 70s. The Fan Club Derby race was proceeded by a parade of Floats. This is the Wainman entry at a very wet Northampton in the early 70s.

The final tuned out to be a memorable race between Frankie and Dutch superstar, Ouwe Bijlsma.

Frankie, Sr also made the trip over…

Later in the meeting Frankie borrowed the Piet Scholtanus car, and rolled it!

These are a couple of shots the paper requested to accompany the interview.

Frankie has been a regular visitor to New Zealand; this photo is from 2005.
