Flashback Friday: 2006, Take 2

Following on from last week‘s Flashback Friday, here are some more of the best moments from 2006 that will make you ask ‘has it really been 10 years?’

Peter van den Bosch started on the pole for the 2006 European Champs

His race ended early when he rode the wall on the first turn

A hot day got even hotter for John Riley at the Euros. Riley had his best season in 2006; winning two finals early in the year at King’s Lynn and Belle Vue.

Dave Schapp burns some rubber during the Euro meeting. Rumours from across the North Sea indicate that Dave may be making a comeback in 2016.

The changing paint scheme of Frankie Wainman Jr was never more evident than in the sunset at Skegness’ Thursday meeting.

Wimbledon is under threat from redevelopment and may not be around much longer. The emission charges were the first blow to F1s in the capital, but Spedeworth always made the F1s feel welcome.

Wimbledon’s front stretch grandstand has been closed for a while, but it is still a well-appointed race track. It’s one of the many great facilities on the BriSCA F1 circuit and fans from overseas are often amazed at the standard of the spectator facilities at our raceways.

Dean Whitwell tested the Wimbledon fence, and lost! Dean is still recovery from injuries sustained at Ipswich a few years ago, but he was back on track during the 2015 season and all F1 fans hope he will be seen on the raceways again in 2016.

The Spedeworth pace car heads the BriSCA F1s. Proof that oval racing is one big family .

BriSCA F2 star Gordon Moodie made a few appearances in f1s during the 2006 season. He is seen here on his way to a third place finish in the final at Belle Vue.

Mat Newson celebrates winning the World Masters at Northampton.

The ditch at Sint Maarten has been replaced with a steel fence for 2016. Scenes like this will be a thing of the past, but it is widely expected that car counts and the racing will go up one more notch at the popular North Holland track.

Tim Warwick leads the pack at Sheffield. Tim will be in his 36th year of racing in 2016.

Mike Kingston catches the Sheffield fence.

David Burton had a few outings towards the end of the 2006, picking up a Grand National win at Northampton along the way.

Dean Whitwell makes a splash at “Sunny Brafield”

American Johnny Pickard represented the USA in the 2002 World Final. He came over for a one-off appearance at the tail end of the 2006 season, where he picked up a fourth place finish in the final at Northampton’s October meeting.

The Smith/Wainman battles of 2006 delighted the crowds up and down the country; the duo are seen here at King’s Lynn.
